[G] Ivory binding of the Melisende Psalter representing King David (1131-43)

Resource added

Full description

This devotional book contains canticles, prayers, and a litany for Queen Melisende. Internally, it was lavishly illuminated by an artist named Basilius who worked in Jerusalem; the ivory bindings, which illustrate scenes from the life of King David and vices and works of charity, appear to have been crafted by an individual named Herodius. The luxurious codex is a testament to the wealth and distinctive culture of the royal court at Jerusalem.
