Full description

The Contagious Diseases Acts (CD Acts) were originally passed by UK Parliament in 1864 with amendments made in 1866 and, as shown here, in 1869. The Act was the state’s attempt to regulate prostitution, and sanctioned magistrates with the power to order a genital examination of prostitutes for the symptoms of venereal disease (VD), and detain infected women within lock hospitals.
